The client
WebLinks Research is a South Australian company publishing a searchable database of Internet sites for use specifically by teachers, librarians and students. With the help of NetConstructs, WebLinks have expanded the service to the United Kingdom and South Africa.
The task
To provide a more efficient form of distribution and administration for the Weblinks database to schools both in Australia and overseas.
Information had to be imported into an online database which could be accessed by many thousands of Internet users at one time. It needed to incorporate a powerful search engine designed specifically for end users needs.
Visitors needed to be able to purchase a subscription online via real time e-commerce and be able to immediately access the database.Any solution needed to handle the growing volumes of database content and subscription users each year.
The solution
NetConstructs built and hosts a solution that allows:
- The original MS Access database to be imported into MS SQL to meet the demand for high volume access and advanced searching. It handles hundreds of thousands of logins and searches, operating 7x24x365.
- An automatic subscription and renewal service through real time e-commerce, allowing users to subscribe and be using the system within seconds. Users are automatically e-mailed renewal information prior to their subscription expiring.
- SSL security encrypts all the confidential data transferred.
- Individual users can add and manage their own content within the general database. This additional content is not accessible to other users.
- An integrated back-end was developed which allows WebLinks Research to monitor sales and user activity, and an e-mail facility allows WebLinks Research to instantly inform users of updates.
