Australian Pome Fruit Improvement Program (APFIP)
The client
Australian Pome Fruit Improvement Program (APFIP Ltd) is a not-for-profit company setup to develop and promote the international competitiveness of the Australian pome fruit industry.
APFIP approached NetConstructs in 2002 with the idea of simplifying, standardising, recording and then reporting on field data collected for its pome fruit program.
The task
Data from evaluation sites (orchards) around Australia needed to be collected, stored and then reported upon. Data ranged from tree and fruit characteristics to environmental readings.
Any solution needed to handle the growing volumes of data collected each year.
APFIP suppliers from within Australia and around the world needed to securely access statistical reports based on the data collected.
NetConstructs built a solution that allows:
- APFIP observers to remotely enter data and photographs collected at the evaluation sites.
- APFIP administration staff to create site plans; keeping track of site layout and varieties.
- APFIP suppliers to log-in from any Internet connection world wide and access instant reports and photographs.
- Weather data from electronic monitoring stations to be uploaded and integrated into reports.
APFIP now have a world leading Web based input and reporting application built around a central database hosted on NetConstructs servers in Adelaide.
A Web based interface allows various levels of access to the database via user accounts that can be managed by APFIP administrators.
SSL security encrypts all the data accessed ensuring confidential information is safe.
APFIP can monitor and track usage of the application at all times.

NetConstructs took the time to research and understand the business needs of APFIP, its suppliers and clients, then developed a detailed design specification. Using a structured approach to build a tailored solution that meets the exact needs of APFIP now and into the future.
